Solar energy is a tried and tested power source that is already being used around the world for numerous commercial, industrial, government and domestic applications. It is powering water pumps in African villages, weather stations in the Antarctic and satellites in space! Here we calculated panel requirements for you, based on your quick assessment of power needs. This calculation provides a useful guildline to working out which panels you will need. The simple calculation is explained below. Batteries are not supplied with these kits, as they are generally not sold by mail order, however they are easily available from car accessory shops or (usually cheaper) caravan supplies (see Yellow Pages). Of course, if you are using solar energy to power your caravan or boat, for example, you have your battery already.
Step1: Calculate Energy Required to Run Appliances:
Enter the power rating and the number of hours used per day for up to five appliances, then click on "calculate"
:

Appliance 1: Watts   operating for   Hours

Total Energy Requ'd by appliances per day is: WattHours
Appliance 2: Watts   operating for   Hours
Appliance 3: Watts   operating for   Hours
Appliance 4: Watts   operating for   Hours
Appliance 5: Watts   operating for   Hours

Step2: Calculate Energy Required from Solar Panels:
The panels will therefore need to supply this amount of energy to the battery each day, to cover this total power required by your appliances.

However, to account for natural losses, we multiply the result by 1.2 (this factor allows for natural system losses, assuming 85% efficiency). Therefore, we will assume the panels will actually need to be able to supply a total of WattHours

Step3: Calculate Power Rating of Solar Panels:

SUMMER (Seven hours of Sunshine per day)
In order to supply WattHours of energy per day, the panels (which we assume receive 7 hours sunshine in the UK), will need to be rated in total at divided by 7 = Watts

AVERAGE (Four hours Sunshine per day)
In order to supply WattHours of energy per day, the panels (which we assume receive 4 hours sunshine in the UK), will need to be rated in total at divided by 4 = Watts
